In 2014, Judge Dave Reich and his wife Ann decided that the best way to spread Christmas cheer was to gather the community, dress them up in Santa suits, and run a 5K together! After that, the rest was history! The Santa Run is now an annual event that brings joy to the community and sheds light on a difficult topic; addiction recovery.
RADD. The Santa Run is organized on behalf of RADD (Runners Against Destructive Decisions) and the recovery community by “The Santa Run,” a 501(c)(3) charity, as an event to raise awareness of addiction issues in our community. RADD is a running group formed with the specific goal of helping people recovering from addictions. RADD provides a healthy lifestyle alternative for those in recovery and their families. With the help of many dedicated volunteers, RADD has been encouraging people to run three days a week since April 2014.
Why a Santa Run? The Santa Run is a very visual event in which everyone runs in a Santa suit! It provides a tremendous opportunity to bring attention to the pervasive problem of addiction in our society in a positive way. We hear of the negative impact of addiction every day. However, the holidays are a time of hope. The Santa Run sends a positive message of hope to those dealing with addiction. Amidst the darkness of addiction, there are many success stories and the Santa Run will celebrate those successes.
Running can change lives. It requires people to set goals and work to achieve those goals. It provides a sense of pride and achievement when goals are accomplished. It helps people get stronger, physically, mentally and emotionally. We hope the Santa Run will raise awareness of addiction issues and allow more people suffering from addiction to learn about and benefit from healthy lifestyle choices like the RADD running program.
